About This Sarough
Where it comes from
This is a Sarough, a hand-knotted Persian rug woven in the Arak region of Iran, here measuring 213 x 130 cm (7'0" x 4'3"). The type is best known for dense floral patterns set against the deep burgundy or mahogany ground that gave rise to its nickname, "classic Persian red". This piece takes the type in a different direction: the field is a warm terracotta-orange, and its medallion breaks from the usual single round rosette entirely.
What you see
The eye goes first to the centre, where a large cross-shaped medallion is built not from one motif but from four oversized paisley cones, radiating outward from a small octagonal core. Sage-green scrollwork traces the paisley outlines, and mustard-gold florals fill between them, with ivory cartouches and powder-blue panels adding quieter notes across the rust-orange ground. All of this sits inside a wide navy-black border, itself worked with paisley vinery, and closed at the edge by a thin rust-red guard stripe. The navy holds the warmer field the way a frame holds a painting, giving the whole design a settled, contained quality despite the movement within it.
How it was made
A cotton warp anchors the piece, and the pile is hand-spun wool, knotted to a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, with a pile height of 12 millimetres. That knot count is high for a wool rug of this size, and it is what allowed the weaver to turn four paisley cones into a single continuous cross rather than four separate blobs of colour: the curves of the boteh close in tightly enough to read as one sculptural form instead of a repeated motif. A rug at this density represents several months at the loom, and it shows in the crispness of the scrollwork rather than in any single dramatic detail.
