About This Sarough

Where it comes from

A Sarough, also written Saruk, from the Arak region of Persia, this piece measures 85 x 67 cm (2'9" x 2'2") — a small format for a type usually woven to cover an entire room. Sarough is known above all for its "classic Persian red" ground and its close, disciplined knotting; here that reputation is quietly set aside for a warm camel gold field instead.

What you see

The field opens in warm camel gold, calm and even, before drawing the eye to a lozenge medallion at the centre, densely filled with a floral spray in burgundy, ivory and sage. Floral spandrels echo the same colours into each corner of the field, while the four corners of the border each carry a small angular palmette in deep bordeaux. The wide cream border itself is dense with vine and blossom, held in check by narrow navy guard stripes worked with a repeating heart motif.

How it was made

This is hand-knotted, hand-spun wool pile set into a cotton foundation, at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. At this small scale, that density is what keeps the medallion's outline crisp rather than blurred. The 12 mm pile stays short and dense, holding a faint sheen across the wool without softening the drawing. Woven within the last twenty years, it carries the old Sarough pattern at a scale once reserved for a footstool cover rather than a full-room carpet.

At home

It suits one spot rather than one room: a bedside in the bedroom, a console in the hallway, or the foot of a favourite armchair. The camel gold warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood. Underfoot the wool is dense and slightly springy, built for daily footsteps rather than for show. Catch it in evening light and the faint sheen lifts, the bordeaux corners quietly asserting themselves.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 85 × 67 cm (0.57 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 0.57 m² that is roughly 110,000 to 140,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
