About This Sarough

Where it comes from

This is a Sarough runner, hand-knotted in the Arak region of west-central Persia, 212 x 79 cm (6'11" x 2'7"). Sarough is known above all for its dense floral drawing set against a warm Persian red ground, a look that filled the finest American houses in the early twentieth century. Here the ground is not red at all, but a deep navy.

What you see

The navy field carries a lattice of diamond compartments, each holding its own bouquet in cream, mustard-gold, dusty blue and rose-pink, more like a garden set out row by row than a single running repeat. At the centre the lattice opens onto a single, larger diamond medallion, more finely drawn than the bouquets around it, giving the runner one clear focal point. A brick-red border of floral vine, about a fifth of the width, closes both sides — the one place the Sarough red appears.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even in thickness, and it takes dye unevenly from strand to strand, so the surface is matte and soft-toned rather than glossy. Left at 12 millimetres, the pile is not sheared close, so the diamond lattice and the central medallion sit forward, sharp against the navy, while the wool stays thick and springy underfoot.

At home

A narrow runner like this suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed. Against a pale floor the navy ground holds its own without much daylight, while the brick-red border and rose-pink bouquets carry the warmth in. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, built for daily footsteps rather than careful stepping around it. Catch it in low light and the mustard-gold and dusty blue in each bouquet shift with every pass.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 212 × 79 cm (1.67 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.67 m² that is roughly 210,000 to 270,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
