About This Sarough

Where it comes from

This is a Sarough, a classic weaving type from the Persian west, here in a generous 308 x 208 cm (10'1" x 6'10"). Sarough rugs are known for firm, elegant knotting and for the deep "Persian red" ground that made them a fixture in the finest American houses of the early twentieth century. This particular piece sets that reputation aside and works instead in navy.

What you see

The field is a dense navy, built not from the all-over floral repeat usual to a Sarough but from interlocking diamond and octagon compartments radiating outward from a small cream rosette at the centre. The effect reads almost like a fractured medallion, more architectural than floral. Cream spandrels and pendants settle into the corners, and within the compartments brick red, camel and touches of teal-blue sit against the navy ground. A wide brick-red border, roughly a fifth of the rug's width, carries cream floral scrollwork and returns the colour the field withholds.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, with a pile of hand-spun wool knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre - a firm, close structure that lets the weaver hold the sharp angles of a diamond lattice without the lines softening into curves, which is what gives this Sarough its unusually geometric bearing. Hand-spun wool takes dye with slight variation from strand to strand, and this is part of why the navy field carries such quiet depth rather than sitting flat. At 12 millimetres the pile stands thick enough to hold that structure cleanly under low, even light.

At home

A rug of this size sits naturally under a dining table or anchoring a seating group in a living room. Against pale floorboards the navy holds its ground rather than receding into them, while the brick-red border keeps the whole composition warm instead of cool. Underfoot the dense wool pile is firm and substantial, built for a room in daily use rather than one to be stepped carefully around. Follow it through a day of changing light and the camel and teal accents inside the lattice surface and settle back in turn.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 308 × 208 cm (6.41 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 6.41 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
