About This Sarough
Where it comes from
A Sarough rug, also written Saruk, 197 x 131 cm (6'6" x 4'4"), from the weaving towns around Arak in west-central Iran, a region long associated with the deepest, most recognisable red in Persian carpet weaving and with dense, tightly drawn floral work. This piece keeps the fine, elegant knotting the type is known for, but sets it against a cream field rather than the mahogany or burgundy ground most Saroughs are built on.
What you see
The first impression is of a bright ivory ground tiled all over with small floral medallions and star-shaped rosettes, closer to a printed textile repeat than to the single dominant medallion most classic Persian rugs carry. Each large medallion holds a dark navy core, almost black against the pale field, giving the pattern real depth where it might otherwise sit flat. A wide brick-red border encloses the field, its scrolling vine and pink rosette cartouches held in check by a slim mustard-gold guard stripe.
How it was made
That crispness comes from the knotting itself. At 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, the weaver could draw each small rosette and medallion outline with real precision rather than approximating it, which is why the motif edges read so sharply against the cream ground. The pile is hand-spun wool, kept low at 12 millimetres over a cotton foundation, so the surface stays smooth and even rather than sinking into a deep, shaggy nap. Months of work at this density are what give the field its jewel-box clarity.
