About This Sarough
Where it comes from
The rug in front of you is a Sarough, from the Arak region of central Persia, a weaving tradition known above all for its deep classic red ground and disciplined, elegant floral drawing. This one measures 203 x 129 cm (6'8" x 4'3"). Where a Sarough usually gathers its pattern around a single central medallion, here five medallions run down the rug in a column, an unusual and rhythmic departure from the type.
What you see
The red field carries a cream inner panel, and it is on this pale ground that the five roundels sit, each filled with a floral rosette and centred in navy blue. Dense floral scrollwork in dusty pink, powder blue, ochre and brown fills the space around them, and the effect is sequential rather than fixed, the eye moving down the column instead of settling on one point. A wide border in ivory and sage-green scrollwork frames the field, held at the outer edge by a plain red guard that draws a firm line around the whole design.
How it was made
This is a hand-knotted rug, wool pile on a cotton warp, and the wool itself is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, which gives it the slight, uneven sheen you see catching in the florals. Knot density here runs to 321,000-380,000 knots per square metre, fine enough to carry the small rosettes and the navy medallion outlines cleanly rather than blurring them, which is what allows five repeats of the same motif to read distinctly rather than as one blur of red. At 12 mm the pile is thick enough to hold its shape underfoot for years of use.
At home
A rug this size suits a bedroom, laid where it will be seen and stepped on daily, or a quieter corner of a living room set up for reading. Against a pale floor the red will hold real warmth in the room; against darker furniture it will simply assert itself. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, wool spun and knotted to be walked on rather than kept for best.
