About This Sarough
Where it comes from
This is a Sarough, also written Sarouk, the Persian floral rug most associated with a deep signature red — here in a near-square 267 x 254 cm (8'9" x 8'4"). Woven in the Arak region of west-central Iran, Saroughs became known in the early twentieth century for close, even knotting and drawing precise enough to sit in the finest houses without ever looking fragile. This particular piece takes that reputation somewhere darker.
What you see
The field is not red at all but a deep night-blue, almost black, and against it the density of the floral scroll reads like something seen by candlelight. Small sprays of pink, salmon, sage and mustard scatter across the dark ground, and only on a closer look does an eight-pointed star medallion emerge at the centre, matched by cartouche pendants top and bottom — present, but never dominant. It is the wide brick-red border, dense with its own scrollwork and edged in cream guard stripes, that carries the colour this design is best known for.
How it was made
The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, which takes dye less evenly and gives the dark field its quiet variation in tone rather than a flat block of colour. Knotted by hand at 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, the pile holds a 12mm depth that lets each small floral motif keep its shape rather than blur into the next — the density that turns months at the loom into a pattern this fine, and a surface still firm enough to be walked on rather than kept for looking at.
At home
Close to square, the rug suits a study or a smaller seating group as easily as a table setting, somewhere it can be seen whole rather than cut by furniture. The dark field holds its own against dark wood or leather, while the red border keeps a room from feeling shut in even where daylight is limited. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, built for daily use, and the pale florals catch what light there is, shifting gently as the day moves across them.
