About This Sarough

Where it comes from

A Sarouk runner, 184 x 77 cm (6'0" x 2'6"), from the Sarough weaving district of west-central Iran, a region better known for dense floral patterns on a warm brick-red ground. This piece sets that expectation aside: the field is a deep navy rather than the classic Persian red, carrying the same crowded, finely drawn bouquets that made Sarouk work so prized in the early twentieth century.

What you see

The first impression is of navy running the full length of the runner, densely covered in salmon-pink and cream floral bouquets set into a diamond lattice. Terracotta, mustard-gold and touches of teal sit within the clusters, breaking the pink and cream without ever competing with the ground. Down the centre a chain of small round rosettes runs the length of the field, quietening the lattice into a single vertical line the eye can follow from one end to the other. A narrow floral border in the same salmon and cream repeats the field's palette on its own navy ground, holding the edge without pulling attention from it.

How it was made

Every knot here is tied by hand, at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 per square metre, worked over a cotton warp that keeps a runner this narrow lying flat and true underfoot. The pile is hand-spun wool rather than machine-spun, which takes dye a little unevenly and finishes with a soft, slightly flattened matte surface rather than a sheen. At 12 millimetres it is a thick pile for a piece this size, dense enough to keep the lattice and the rosette chain sharp along the full 184 centimetres.

At home

A runner this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, or at the side of a bed. Where a hallway gets little daylight, the navy holds its depth rather than fading into shadow, while the salmon and cream bouquets keep catching what light there is. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for a floor that is walked rather than admired. As you pass along it, or as daylight shifts across it through the day, the rosette chain down the centre is what keeps drawing the eye.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 184 × 77 cm (1.42 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.42 m² that is roughly 180,000 to 230,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
