About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori rug, also written Luri, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of Iran, sized 229 x 174 cm (7'6" x 5'8"). Lori weaving is usually known for bold, simplified motifs, knotted from memory on a portable loom rather than from a drawn plan. This piece carries none of that boldness. There is no motif here at all, only colour.

What you see

A warm sand-brown dominates, shifting through camel and toffee as the light catches it differently along the length. The colour does not sit evenly: it runs in soft vertical panels, each a slightly different depth of the same brown, so the field reads almost as a series of gentle stripes rather than a single ground. There is no medallion and no border pattern to speak of, only a narrow strip in a deeper brown along the edge, enough to close the field without interrupting its quiet movement.

How it was made

The vertical shifts are abrash, the result of hand-spun wool dyed in small batches, no two lots ever quite matching in tone. A weaver working from memory let those differences run through the piece rather than smoothing them out, and the panels of colour are the record of that choice. The wool is hand-spun throughout, knotted by hand at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, with the pile kept low at 11 mm so the colour carries the rug rather than any texture or relief.

At home

At 229 x 174 cm this suits a seating area in a living room, set before a sofa rather than under a dining table. Against pale or light-wood floors the camel and toffee tones bring warmth without pulling the eye to one point. The low, even pile is soft underfoot yet dense enough for daily use, and through the day the vertical shifts simply catch the light differently, so the rug never looks quite the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 229 × 174 cm (3.98 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 3.98 m² that is roughly 800,000 to 1,000,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
