About This Lori-Pars
Where it comes from
This is a Lori-Pars, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of Iran, measuring 294 x 215 cm (9'8" x 7'1"). Rugs of this kind are knotted from memory on a portable loom, without a drawn plan, and are known for bold, simplified motifs rendered in confident colour. What is unusual here is how that same directness has been turned toward something almost architectural: a grid of large squares, calm and graphic rather than loud.
What you see
The field is a warm cream with a golden undertone, crossed by a grid of soft grey-brown lines that divides it into large, even squares. Each square carries a faint speckled edge, a shade darker than the plain cream at its centre, so that every square reads as a frame within a frame. The border is narrow and only slightly darker than the field itself, barely a frame at all, since the grid runs almost to the edge of the rug. Seen from across a room it settles into an even checkerboard; seen up close, the stippled edges and the gentle horizontal streaking within each square show this was drawn by hand, not by rule.
How it was made
The pile is handspun wool, low and flat, knotted onto a natural wool warp at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — a solid, workmanlike weave rather than an exceptionally fine one, and it is this density that gives the surface its firm, even hand. Handspun yarn is never perfectly uniform in thickness, and that is exactly what produces the soft streaking inside each square and the slightly irregular stippled edges around them: a grid knotted freehand, square by square, from memory rather than from a cartoon, and no two squares quite alike.
At home
At 294 x 215 cm this rug sits comfortably under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, and its quiet cream ground is well suited to a living or dining room with plenty of daylight, where the grid can read clearly rather than compete with a busy table setting. Underfoot the pile is soft but even, low enough to take chairs and daily footfall without complaint.
