About This Loribaft

Where it comes from

This is a Loribaft, a rug from the Lori — also written Luri — nomadic weaving tradition of Iran's Zagros mountains, made here in India at 198 x 140 cm (6'6" x 4'7"). Lori weaving is known for bold, simplified motifs in confident, hand-mixed colour, pieces meant to be lived on rather than admired from a distance. This one takes that tradition and turns the volume down.

What you see

The field is a warm sand beige, almost camel, and at first glance it reads as plain. Look again and a vinescroll of palmettes and serrated leaves emerges, radiating outward from a central point with no medallion to anchor it, worked in ivory so close to the ground colour that it sits as a shadow rather than a drawing. A narrow ivory border, carrying a fine geometric guard stripe, closes the rug without ever raising its voice.

How it was made

The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton warp, hand-knotted at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre and clipped to an even 10 millimetres, dense enough for a firm, lasting surface rather than fine pictorial detail. The silk does the real work: it catches light differently from the surrounding wool, so the vinescroll shows only as a shift of sheen, never as a change of dye. The pattern is never stated outright; it is left entirely to how the surface catches the light.

At home

A rug this size suits a bedroom, laid where morning light crosses it, or a quiet seating corner. The camel field warms a pale floor and holds its own against darker furniture. Underfoot it is dense and firm, wool and silk knotted close, made for daily use rather than careful protection. As the light moves across it through the day, the vinescroll comes and goes, so the rug never quite looks the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 198 × 140 cm (2.77 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.77 m² that is roughly 350,000 to 440,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
