About This Lori-Pars
Where it comes from
This is a Lori-Pars, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of Iran, also written Luri, measuring 226 x 181 cm (7'5" x 5'11"). Lori rugs are knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and they are known for bold, simplified motifs in confident colour. What sets this piece apart is that the motif is not a tribal geometry at all, but a grid of blocks that reads as modern abstraction.
What you see
The field is a warm sand beige, and across it sits an irregular grid of rectangular blocks in a full range of browns, from tan and camel through chocolate to near-black, with a few blocks softened to grey-taupe. No block matches another in size or tone, and the grid keeps no fixed rhythm, so the eye keeps resettling rather than following a set path. There is no framing border; the blocks run close to the edges, held back only by a narrow plain margin of the same cream ground.
How it was made
This looseness comes directly from how the rug was made. A Lori weaver works without a cartoon, carrying the design in memory and adjusting it knot by knot as the piece grows, which is why no two blocks line up exactly. The wool is hand-spun before dyeing, so the yarn itself varies slightly in thickness, and that variation is what gives the surface its visible striations and its matte, ungleaming finish. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, knotted over a natural wool warp with an 11 mm pile, the weave is dense enough to keep the blocks crisp while still yielding softly underfoot.
At home
At just over two metres, this is a rug for a seating area in a living room, laid where a sofa group or a pair of armchairs can gather around it rather than a table. Against a pale floor, the cream ground keeps the room light while the darker blocks bring weight and structure; against darker furniture, it holds its own without competing for attention. The pile is soft underfoot and made for daily use rather than careful display, and as the afternoon light moves across it, the tonal browns shift gently against the cream, so the grid never quite settles into looking the same way twice.
