About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars rug, also written Luri-Pars, a tribal weaving from the Zagros mountains of southern Iran, measuring 203 x 151 cm (6'8" x 4'11"). Lori and Gabbeh weavings are usually known for bold, simplified motifs in confident colour, knotted by hand from memory rather than from any drawn plan. This piece stands in that same tradition and, unusually for it, leaves the motif out altogether.

What you see

The field is a warm honey-beige, touched with gold and threaded through with soft taupe. There is no medallion, no border ornament, nothing drawn onto the surface at all. What holds the eye instead is a gentle vertical streaking, tone moving into tone along the length of the rug like light passing through cloud. At each short end a narrow strip of flat beige selvedge closes the field, barely a shade apart from it, so the plainness carries all the way to the edge.

How it was made

That streaking comes from the wool itself. Lori weavers spin their own yarn by hand, and hand-spun wool takes dye unevenly from skein to skein, so a plain field never sits quite flat; it moves in soft bands of tone as the weaver works. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre the weave is looser than a city workshop piece, which is exactly what keeps the yarn thick and lustrous underfoot. Leaving a Lori field without a motif is its own kind of statement.

At home

A rug this size suits a bedroom, laid where bare feet meet it first thing, or a quiet corner of a living room. The honey-beige tone warms pale floorboards and holds its own beside dark wood, without competing for attention. Underfoot the pile is thick and soft, hand-spun rather than machine-spun, forgiving on tired feet. As daylight moves across the room, the striations catch and fade in turn, so the colour is never quite still.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 203 × 151 cm (3.07 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 3.07 m² that is roughly 620,000 to 770,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
