About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar rug — known in the trade as Lavar Kerman — a city-workshop weaving from the Kerman district of Iran, 214 x 149 cm (7'0" x 4'11"). Since the Qajar era, Ravar has produced some of Persia's finest work, prized for signed, traceable pieces and a disciplined balance of medallion, border and corner. It is refinement rather than abundance that gives the type its name.

What you see

The field opens in warm ivory, calm rather than crowded, drawing the eye to a lobed medallion at the centre. Small floral sprays in dusty rose, sage and ochre sit loosely across the cream ground rather than massing into a continuous pattern. At its heart, a burgundy diamond is ringed by nested floral bands, finials reaching toward the field's edge. A wide navy border, a fifth of the rug's width, closes the composition in dense scrollwork that holds the pale field in place.

How it was made

That openness was drawn, not left to chance: a Kerman cartoon plans each spray and each gap before a single knot is tied. The pile is hand-spun wool, worked at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre over a cotton warp, fine enough to hold the medallion's nested rings without blurring them. Clipped to twelve millimetres, the wool sits smooth and even, catching a soft sheen that keeps the outlines crisp even where the field around them stays empty.

At home

This is a rug for a bedroom, a study, or a quiet seating corner, somewhere it can be seen whole. The ivory field lifts a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, the burgundy medallion giving it enough weight not to disappear. Underfoot it is dense, smooth and firm, suited to a calm room rather than heavy daily traffic. In good light the cream field takes on a soft sheen, the eye returning always to the deep red heart at its centre.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 214 × 149 cm (3.19 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.19 m² that is roughly 1.0 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
