About This Ravar

Where it comes from

A Ravar rug, 233 x 147 cm (7'8" x 4'10"), from the weaving town near Kerman in Persia whose finest pieces have been prized since the Qajar era for their fine detail and their traceable, often signed lineage. Ravar work is usually built around a central medallion, poised between borders and corner fillings. This one is not. It is woven full across, field to field, with nothing at the centre to gather the eye.

What you see

The ground is a deep, near-black navy, and across it float blush pink, salmon, ochre and sage blossoms on a fine vine, ivory and dusty blue threaded through. The pattern runs edge to edge with a quiet vertical symmetry, and just right of centre a small gathering of pink and salmon rosettes forms a softer patch in the scatter, without ever settling into a proper medallion. A multi-band border of dusty blue and cream floral vine, held between narrow navy guard stripes, closes the field on all sides, itself close to a sixth of the rug's width.

How it was made

That density is the work of a very fine knot: 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand over a cotton warp. At that count a weaver can place a blossom, its stem and its shadow within the space a coarser rug would give to a single petal, which is how the field carries so much incident without ever losing clarity. The pile itself is hand-spun wool, kept low at 12 millimetres, which takes a light sheen rather than a deep one and lets the pastels sit close to the surface, almost lit from within against the dark ground.

At home

In a living room or a smaller dining setting, this is a rug for a seating group or a table for four rather than a great hall, and it asks to be looked into rather than skirted around. Against a pale floor the near-black ground steadies the room; against dark wood or leather it holds its own. Underfoot it is tight, smooth and firm, built for a room in regular use rather than a passage kept for best. Move a lamp across it in the evening and the sheen shifts blossom by blossom, so the field never quite settles, which is exactly its pleasure.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 233 × 147 cm (3.43 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.43 m² that is roughly 1.1 to 1.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
