About This Ravar
Where it comes from
Ravar, sold in the trade as Lavar Kerman, is a city-workshop weaving from the district around Kerman in southeastern Iran, made to a drawn design rather than from memory. Since the Qajar era it has stood for the finest level of Kerman work, prized enough in Europe and America a century ago that collectors still ask for it by name. This piece measures 244 x 211 cm (8'0" x 6'11").
What you see
The field is a warm cream-gold, and it is almost entirely covered: a dense vine-and-tree pattern spreads across it in brick red and dusty pink flowers, olive-brown foliage, and touches of soft blue, radiating from a medallion so understated it takes a moment to find the centre. There is no bare ground anywhere in the field, yet the effect is calm rather than crowded, because the colours sit close together in tone. A deep navy border draws a firm line around all of it, holding the pattern in.
How it was made
That fullness is a hallmark of fine Ravar drawing, and the density behind it is real: 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand over a cotton warp, is the kind of work that takes a weaver the better part of a year at this size. The pile itself is hand-spun wool rather than the more even, machine-spun yarn used in lesser pieces, and the slight irregularity in the spun thread is exactly why the surface has a soft, slightly fuzzy hand instead of the banded sheen you sometimes see catch the light on finer city rugs. Refinement here reads as warmth, not polish.
At home
A rug this size sits well under a dining table for six or anchors a seating group in a living room, and the gold field is generous with light in a room that gets little sun, while holding its own comfortably against dark wood or navy upholstery. Underfoot it is dense and substantial at 12 mm of pile, firm enough for daily use and, being newly woven, in every way made to be walked on rather than kept for best. Morning light picks out the pink and dusty blue in the flowers before the room settles into the gold for the rest of the day.
