About This Ravar

Where it comes from

A Ravar rug, also written Rawar and known in the trade as Lavar Kerman, hand-knotted near Kerman in Iran, 246 x 199 cm (8'1" x 6'6"). The town has produced some of Persia's finest carpets since the Qajar era, prized for fine drawing and for woven signatures that turn individual pieces into traceable heirlooms. This one sets that tradition on a soft cream ground rather than the deep red more usually seen.

What you see

The field opens in a warm ivory, calm enough to let the drawing carry the room. At its centre sits a finely drawn medallion built from radiating rosettes, worked in dusty pink, navy and touches of gold and rust, with sage-green leaves threading between the sprays scattered across the field. A narrow steel-blue border, dense with paisley, sits inside a wider band of navy florals, the two together framing the cream field in a distinct two-tone edge that holds the whole design together.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre — enough to draw the medallion's petals and the paisley border with real precision. Hand-spun yarn gives the wool a slightly uneven, living texture no machine yarn matches, and the short 12 millimetre pile lets a soft lustre gather in the floral motifs while the ground stays a quiet, matte cream. At this density, a piece this size takes months of steady work at the loom.

At home

A rug of this size suits a living room seating group or a dining table for six. The cream ground lifts a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, without raising its voice. Underfoot the pile is fine, dense and soft rather than deep, comfortable in daily use. As daylight moves across it, the dusty rose and navy of the medallion catch and soften in turn.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 246 × 199 cm (4.90 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.90 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
