About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar Kerman, a city-workshop rug from the small town of Ravar near Kerman in Iran, measuring 239 x 146 cm (7'10" x 4'9"). Ravar—also written Rawar—has produced some of the finest weaving Kerman is known for since the Qajar era, prized less for boldness than for fine detail and a notably pleasant colouring.

What you see

The field opens in a warm ivory, and the eye settles at once on a bold mustard-gold octagonal medallion at its centre. Two smaller pendant medallions echo its shape along the same axis, each ringed by delicate floral garlands in dusty pink, coral and sage that soften across the cream ground, with touches of powder blue further out. A wide navy-blue floral border closes the composition, held on either side by a narrow deep-red guard stripe that sharpens the contrast without disturbing the calm.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool rather than machine-spun, so each thread carries a faint irregularity that catches the light unevenly across the surface. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, the weaver could still draw the medallion's points and the garlands' fine stems with precision, the structure staying flat and stable throughout. A pile height of 12 millimetres gives the wool a soft depth and a light sheen without ever blurring the drawing beneath it.

At home

A rug this size suits a smaller sitting area, a reading corner, or a bedroom, somewhere it can be seen whole rather than lost under a large table. The ivory field and its gentle accent colours warm a pale wooden floor and hold their own quietly against darker furniture, never competing with what stands around them. Underfoot the pile is dense yet soft, firm enough for daily life and pleasant to walk on. As daylight moves across the room, the light sheen of the wool turns the mustard medallion from gold to a deeper amber, a change worth watching for.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 239 × 146 cm (3.49 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.49 m² that is roughly 1.1 to 1.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
