About This Ravar
Where it comes from
Ravar is a small town near Kerman that has, since the Qajar era, produced some of the finest weaving in Persia, often traded under the name Lavar Kerman. This is a Ravar in the classic medallion format, 259 x 183 cm (8'6" x 6'0"), and it belongs to the branch of that tradition most prized by collectors for restraint rather than richness of colour alone.
What you see
A deep brick red field carries a dense scroll of small flowers, drawn with the kind of precision that rewards a close look rather than a distant one. At the centre sits an ivory-and-blue medallion with its pendants, and around it the red gives way, at each corner, to ivory spandrels — a contrast frame that most Kerman rugs of this design do not have. The wide border repeats the theme in miniature, pink, powder blue and gold sprays set into cream, held at the inner edge by a thin red guard stripe. Where many Kerman florals lean toward rust and terracotta throughout, this one holds a cooler, softer palette against the same red ground, and it is that combination that gives the whole piece its unusual quiet.
How it was made
That fineness is a function of the knotting. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, the weaver could draw the small florals with real precision rather than approximation, each petal and stem staying legible instead of blurring into the next. The pile is hand-spun wool over a cotton warp, twelve millimetres deep, spun with enough evenness to take a slight natural lustre — the soft sheen you see across the red field is the wool itself, not a finish. Months of work sit in that density, and it shows in how cleanly the medallion's curves hold their line.

A rug of this size and colouring earns its place under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, somewhere it can be seen whole rather than glimpsed in passing. The red holds its own against dark wood or leather, while the powder blue and ivory keep the room from feeling heavy, particularly on a paler floor.
