Where it comes from
Ravar is a small town near Kerman that, since the Qajar period, has given its name to some of the finest weaving Persia has produced, sold in the trade as Lavar Kerman. This rug measures 224 x 173 cm (7'4" x 5'8"), a size suited to a seating group or a bedroom floor rather than a grand hall, and it carries the qualities the town is known for: exacting detail, a composed palette, and a design built around a central medallion balanced by matching corner spandrels.
What you see
The ground is a deep navy-black, and it is almost entirely given over to a dense, small-scale floral pattern of rust-red, gold and terracotta blossoms, so thickly set that the dark field barely shows through. Out of this density rises a lozenge medallion in pale ivory-cream, and because the field around it is so packed, the medallion does not sit against a plain background in the usual way; it seems to float, luminous, as the one open space in an otherwise covered surface. Matching floral spandrels hold the corners, and a multi-band border carries the same idea outward, its powder-blue floral ground flanked by narrower rust and cream guard stripes.
How it was made
Rendering blossoms this small and this numerous, without the pattern collapsing into noise, calls for a fine knot: this piece runs to 321,000-380,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand in handspun wool over a cotton warp. That density is what lets each flower keep a distinct outline against its neighbours, and what gives the ivory medallion its crisp edge rather than a blurred one. The wool, spun by hand rather than machine, carries a faint irregularity that catches light unevenly across the 12 mm pile, giving the surface its quiet sheen.

A rug this composed suits a living room, laid in front of a sofa or under a low table where the pattern can be read at leisure rather than crossed at speed. Against pale floorboards the navy ground gives the room weight; against dark furniture the ivory medallion still holds its own and draws the eye.
