About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar Kerman, also known in the trade as Lavar Kerman, a Persian city rug from the Kerman region of Iran, measuring 268 x 149 cm (8'9" x 4'11"). Since the Qajar era, Ravar has stood for the finest quality Kerman weaving can offer, a name collectors reach for when the conversation turns to fine detail and calm, considered colour.

What you see

The first impression is of air: a wide ivory field, uncluttered, on which a lobed medallion rises in nested layers of navy, red and cream, almost jewel-like against the pale ground around it. Loose sprays of rose, salmon and sage-green scrollwork drift outward from the medallion without ever closing ranks, leaving the field to breathe. A broad indigo border, filled with floral cartouches and scrollwork, closes the composition and returns some of the medallion's weight to the outer edge of the rug.

How it was made

The pile is handspun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of 381,000 to 440,000 knots per square metre, a fineness that let the weaver draw the medallion's several nested layers and the finer floral outlines with real precision rather than approximation. At 12 millimetres the pile sits low and even, holding a light, soft sheen that gathers most visibly in the floral motifs and gives the medallion its slightly raised, dimensional quality against the flatter field around it.

At home

A rug this size suits a bedroom underfoot beside the bed, or a smaller sitting corner where it can be seen whole rather than half-covered by furniture. Against a pale floor the ivory field lifts rather than competes, while the indigo border holds its own even near dark wood. The wool pile is dense and firm underfoot, made to be walked on daily, and as daylight moves across the room the medallion's layered colour is the first thing the eye keeps returning to.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 268 × 149 cm (3.99 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 381,000 to 440,000 knots per square metre; across 3.99 m² that is roughly 1.5 to 1.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
