About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar rug, often traded in the collector market as Lavar Kerman, woven near Kerman in Iran, a town that has produced some of Persia's finest carpets since the Qajar era. At 240 x 140 cm (7'10" x 4'7"), it is sized for a room rather than a hall, built on the balance of medallion, border and corner fields that defines the type.

What you see

The field is a warm ivory, scattered with small florals in brick red, pink and olive green. Across its centre runs an elongated medallion, drawn not as a single round form but as two overlapping lobes reaching almost the full length of the rug, packed with fine floral work in navy and dusty blue. Around this, a wide multi-band border in navy, pale blue, red and ochre carries alternating floral cartouches, its density holding the eye at the edge as firmly as the medallion holds it at the centre.

How it was made

Each knot is tied by hand onto a cotton warp, the pile hand-spun wool, set at around 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to draw the medallion's two lobes as a continuous curve rather than a stepped outline. Spinning the wool fine and even before knotting is what gives the clipped, 12 millimetre pile its slight sheen. It is this pairing, fine spinning with high density, that Ravar weavers have long used to hold detail that coarser knotting would blur.

At home

At 240 x 140 cm, this suits a seating area or a bedroom, laid where the medallion can be seen whole rather than half-covered by a table. The ivory ground lifts a room with darker floors or furniture, while the navy and brick red hold their own without weighing the space down. Underfoot the pile sits close and firm, fine enough for daily use rather than for keeping safe behind a rope. Morning light catches the sheen worked into the medallion's floral detail, and that is where the eye keeps returning.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 240 × 140 cm (3.36 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.36 m² that is roughly 1.1 to 1.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
