Ravar rugs come from the village of Ravar, the most renowned weaving village in the Kerman region of southeastern Iran. Knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot on cotton foundations with a distinctive three-ply weft structure, Ravar represents the premium tier within the Kerman tradition, historically producing some of the finest pieces from this celebrated weaving region.
Rich floral patterning with central medallions framed by playful floral motifs dominates, rendered in vivid reds combined with beige, the characteristic Ravar colour balance. The fine knotting and high-quality sheep's wool create a surface of remarkable softness and luminous sheen. The master weaver has signed this piece, a mark of exceptional quality and pride in their craft.
More on Ravar rugs: origin, making and how to recognise a genuine piece
Measuring 294 × 202 cm, with an area of 5.94 m², crafted from Hand-spun Wool, Hand-knotted, this piece is a testament to masterful craftsmanship. The knot density of 441,000 – 500,000 / m² speaks to the extraordinary care woven into every inch.
Preserved in perfect condition, the finest expression of the kerman weaving tradition, refined elegance for sophisticated interiors.
Superior craftsmanship
At 294 × 202 cm (5.94 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.
Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 5.94 m² that is roughly 2.6 to 3.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.
Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
