About This Ravar
Where it comes from
This is a Ravar Kerman, a hand-knotted Persian rug from the small town of Ravar near Kerman, also written Rawar, measuring 266 x 184 cm (8'9" x 6'0"). Traded since the Qajar era, and known in the collector's market as Lavar Kerman, Ravar weaving is regarded as among the most refined of all Kerman production, prized for fine detail, considered colour, and a balanced composition of central medallion, elaborate border and corner spandrels.
What you see
Here the ground breaks from convention: a true, deep black rather than the red or ivory more usual for this type of medallion rug. Against it, dense floral sprays in terracotta, mustard-gold, ivory and dusty pink build outward to a multi-tiered medallion with pendants above and below. Cream cartouche-shaped spandrels hold pale corners against the black. A wide border in mustard-gold and navy, with a central rust-red floral stripe, closes the field, running close to a fifth of the rug's width and giving the black ground a firm, formal frame.
How it was made
That black is not incidental. Holding a deep, even colour across a field this size, without dulling the tones it carries, asks more of both dye and weaver than the red or navy grounds normally chosen for this design. The rug is knotted at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to keep the fine floral drawing crisp against so dark a ground. Hand-spun wool, clipped to a 12 mm pile on a cotton warp, carries a slight natural sheen, and it is this sheen that keeps the black reading as depth rather than sitting flat and dead on the surface.
At home
At 266 x 184 cm this rug suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, somewhere it can be taken in whole. The black ground holds its own against dark furniture and equally against a pale floor, while the terracotta and gold keep the room warm rather than severe. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, made for a room in daily use rather than kept for show. As the light moves across it through the day, the black shifts between charcoal and true depth, and the florals seem to lift free of the ground.
