About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar, a fine city-woven rug from a small town near Kerman that has, since the Qajar era, produced some of the most refined carpets in Persia — often called Lavar Kerman in the trade, and prized for exactly the finesse and settled colouring this piece shows. It measures 227 x 151 cm (7'5" x 4'11"), a size suited to a dining table or a seating group.

What you see

The field opens in pale ivory with a faint champagne cast, scattered with small floral sprays that keep the ground from feeling empty. Across it run three lozenge medallions in rust and navy, chained together horizontally rather than gathered into one central form, so the eye travels along the rug rather than settling in its middle. Sky blue, dusty rose and mustard touches sit inside the drawing, and around it all runs a wide navy border filled with fine floral scrollwork.

How it was made

Each knot is tied by hand in hand-spun wool over a cotton warp, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre — fine enough to draw the small florals with clean, unblurred edges. That resolution is also what allows three medallions to sit in sequence rather than gathered into one large centred form, each lozenge kept distinct at this scale. A pile of twelve millimetres holds the drawing flat and sharp, the wool's slight sheen gathering quietly in the medallion details.

At home

At this size the rug suits a dining table or a living room seating group, somewhere it is seen in full rather than half-covered by furniture. The ivory field lifts a room with dark wood or upholstery, while the navy border and rust medallions hold their own against strong colour nearby. Underfoot the pile is fine, smooth and firm rather than deep, made for daily use rather than display alone. In shifting light the sheen moves differently across the three medallions, so the chain along the field never quite looks the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 227 × 151 cm (3.43 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.43 m² that is roughly 1.1 to 1.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
