About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar, also written Rawar, known in the trade as Lavar Kerman, a city workshop rug from near Kerman in south-eastern Iran, measuring 247 x 200 cm (8'1" x 6'7"). Since the Qajar era these workshops have produced some of Persia's finest pieces, prized for fine detail and a balanced medallion design. This one breaks that pattern: its ground is almost black.

What you see

The field is a deep aubergine, so dark it reads almost black from across the room. Out of it rises a large radiating medallion, its centre a fine rosette turning like a wheel among the petals. Cream-outlined palmette sprays sweep into each corner, carrying coral-pink and salmon flowers among mustard-gold and olive leaves. A wide, multi-band border in slate blue closes the design, its cream paisley and blossom vines drawn with the same clarity, covering about a fifth of the rug.

How it was made

The clarity owes much to density: this rug carries 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp. At that count a weaver can draw a rosette as fine as the one at the medallion's heart, and keep a paisley outline crisp rather than blurred. The pile is hand-spun wool sheared to 12 millimetres, dense underfoot, with a light natural sheen rather than hard shine — the same restraint that keeps this unusually dark field from looking heavy.

At home

At 247 x 200 cm, this rug suits a dining table for six or a seating group in a living room. The aubergine ground holds its own against a pale floor and hides daily wear well, while the coral and cream keep the room warm. Underfoot the dense, evenly sheared pile is firm rather than soft, built to be walked on. As light moves across it, the rosette at the medallion's heart catches first, and the field around it holds steady.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 247 × 200 cm (4.94 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.94 m² that is roughly 2.2 to 2.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
