About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar Kerman, also written Rawar, from the Kerman region of Iran, 239 x 195 cm (7'10" x 6'5"). Ravar has produced some of Persia's most refined weaving since the Qajar era, prized for fine detail and a central medallion set within elaborate borders and corner fillings — the standard by which fine Kerman work is measured.

What you see

The field is a warm ivory, open and uncrowded, against which a bold sunburst medallion glows, its points radiating outward rather than curling into the layered rosette one might expect. Floral pendants trail from its edges, and beyond them only scattered sprays of rust-red and coral blossom, paisley clusters, and touches of sage and dusty pink drift across the cream ground. A wide navy border, dense with paisley and floral scrollwork, closes the field, with a narrow powder-blue guard stepping in between.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre — hand-spinning gives the yarn small natural irregularities that catch the light differently along its length, which is part of why the cream field reads as alive rather than flat. At this density the sunburst's points and the border's scrollwork keep crisp, unblurred edges, and a pile of 12 millimetres sits low enough to hold that sharpness underfoot.

At home

This size suits a dining table, or a seating group in a living room, the ivory field lifting a pale floor and holding its own against dark wood or leather. The wool is dense and firm underfoot, new enough for daily use rather than for keeping for best. As daylight moves across the room it catches the sunburst first, then settles into the quieter field around it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 239 × 195 cm (4.66 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.66 m² that is roughly 1.5 to 1.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
