About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar, sold in the trade as Lavar Kerman, woven in the small city near Kerman that has supplied Persia's finest carpets since Qajar times. At 261 x 177 cm (8'7" x 5'10"), it is sized for a room rather than a hall. Ravar is usually known for a central medallion held in careful balance with its borders; this piece takes a different route.

What you see

The field is a deep midnight blue, close to black, filled edge to edge with a tree of life whose branches carry small birds among sprays of cream and terracotta flowers, sage leaves, and touches of dusty blue and lilac. There is no medallion to rest the eye on; the composition simply continues, dense and unbroken, until it meets a wide camel-gold floral vine border, itself framed by a narrower navy floral guard band that holds the whole design together.

How it was made

The pile is hand-knotted in hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. That density let the weaver draw individual birds and branch tips rather than repeat a motif, giving the tree its narrative feel. Hand-spun wool takes dye unevenly, and this is what gives the cream and terracotta flowers their soft lustre against the matte navy ground. Low in the border, a signature is worked into the design, in keeping with Ravar's habit of naming its weaver.

At home

In a living room, over pale floorboards or against dark furniture, the deep navy holds its own, while the camel border keeps the rug warm rather than sombre. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm at 12 millimetres, made for daily use, not display. As light moves across it, the lustre catches in the flowers first, and the birds seem to shift among the branches.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 261 × 177 cm (4.62 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.62 m² that is roughly 2.0 to 2.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
