About This Ravar

Where it comes from

A Kerman-style medallion rug from Ravar, a small town near Kerman that has produced some of Persia's finest weaving since the Qajar era, measuring 255 x 197 cm (8'4" x 6'6"). In the trade these pieces are often sold as "Lavar Kerman", and collectors rate Ravar work as Kerman quality at its most refined: fine detail, a settled palette, and a medallion composition worked out with real patience rather than left to chance.

What you see

The field reads in two distinct zones rather than one continuous ground, which is unusual for a rug of this type. An ivory centre holds a round floral medallion with its pendants, calm and uncluttered, and around it runs a separate band in dusty blue, packed close with paisley shapes and floral sprays. Only then does the wide navy border take over, dense with pink and coral florets on scrolling vines, a firm dark edge after all that pale colour within. The effect is a rug with more depth to it than the usual flat-ground medallion piece, because the eye moves through a sequence of grounds rather than across a single field.

How it was made

That crispness comes from the knotting. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, worked in hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, the weaver had enough resolution to keep the ivory and dusty-blue zones cleanly separated rather than blurring into each other, and to draw each paisley and floret with a sharp edge. A 12 mm pile in soft, matte hand-spun wool holds that definition underfoot as well as to the eye, catching a light sheen without gloss.

At home

A rug at this size sits well in a dining room under a table for six, or in a living room in front of a sofa group. The ivory ground lifts a room with darker furniture, while the navy border gives it enough weight to hold its own against a pale floor. The wool is dense enough for daily use, not a piece to be kept for best. Under changing light through the day, the ivory centre and blue band shift against each other in a way a single-ground rug never quite manages.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 255 × 197 cm (5.02 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 5.02 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
