About This Ravar
Where it comes from
This is a Ravar, the small town near Kerman that in the trade is often called Lavar Kerman, and it measures 236 x 176 cm (7'9" x 5'9"). Ravar rugs are the name collectors reach for when they want Kerman quality at its finest, and they are traditionally built around a central medallion set within elaborate borders and corner fillings. This piece takes the same fineness and turns it to a different end: there is no medallion here at all, and the balance comes from the pattern itself.
What you see
The field is a deep navy black, so densely covered in rose sprays that from a short distance it reads almost as texture rather than as a drawn pattern. Sprays of salmon-pink and coral blossoms fan outward from a shared base on each side, mustard-gold foliage and sage-green leaves threading between them, with cream and white flowers set in among the darker tones. There is no still centre to rest on; the eye moves with the sprays as they open across the field. A wide ivory border closes the design down, its red inner guard and navy floral outer band holding the dark field firmly in place.
How it was made
A rug this packed with detail depends on fine knotting, and here the density runs to 441,000-500,000 knots per square metre, worked in hand-spun wool over a cotton foundation. That density is what lets each small rose and leaf keep a clean, crisp edge rather than blurring into its neighbours, and it is what gives the field its slightly ribbed, closely packed surface. At a 12 mm pile height the wool is clipped low and tight, so the motifs sit close to the surface with a light sheen rather than sinking into depth.
At home
In a living room, laid under a seating group, the navy-black field holds its own against darker furniture and gives a pale floor real weight and warmth, while the ivory border keeps the whole piece from reading as too heavy. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than one kept for best. As daylight moves across it through the day, the low sheen catches the rose sprays in turn, and it is the sort of field you keep finding new movement in, long after you thought you knew it.
