About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar, the finest expression of Kerman weaving, known in the trade as Lavar Kerman, from the town near Kerman that has produced some of Persia's most refined carpets since the Qajar era. This piece measures 252 x 195 cm (8'3" x 6'5"). Ravar designs are known for fine drawing and a balanced medallion, and this one takes an unusually open reading of that formula.

What you see

The field is a bright ivory, carrying a round central medallion with pendants above and below. Sprays of paisley and small florals in rust-red, salmon and mustard scatter loosely across the open ground, with sage-green leaves threaded between them. The corners are left almost bare, holding just a single flower spray each, so the field keeps its light. A wide navy-blue border, dense with floral scrollwork, closes the design, softened on its inner edge by a paler blue paisley guard.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton foundation at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, fine enough to draw the paisleys and florals with real precision rather than lean on pattern density to carry the design. That precision lets the corners stay open without looking unfinished — the drawing is confident enough to need no filling. At 12 millimetres the pile sits low and even, giving the surface a crisp definition and a light sheen.

At home

At 252 x 195 cm, this suits a living room or dining room, comfortably under a seating group or a table. The ivory ground lifts a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood or leather, without competing for attention. Underfoot it is dense, firm and smooth, a new weave made for daily use. As light crosses the room, the scattered paisleys and open corners keep catching the eye anew.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 252 × 195 cm (4.91 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.91 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
