About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar rug, sometimes traded under the name Lavar Kerman, 238 x 151 cm (7'10" x 4'11"), from the small town near Kerman that has produced some of Persia's finest weaving since the Qajar era. Ravar pieces are known for fine detail and an unusually pleasant sense of colour, and many carry a weaver's or patron's signature, which makes them traceable heirlooms rather than anonymous work.

What you see

The first impression here is cool rather than warm. An ivory field opens around a central octagonal medallion whose interior is a soft sage green, a colour rarely found at the heart of a Persian medallion rug. Two smaller diamond-shaped pendant medallions flank it in quiet symmetry. Around them, sprays of dusty pink flowers and garlands of pale blue drift across the ivory ground. A broad navy-blue floral border closes the composition, held on either side by a narrow brick-red guard stripe.

How it was made

This piece is hand-knotted, using hand-spun rather than machine-spun wool for the pile, which takes dye and light slightly unevenly and is what gives the floral details their soft sheen and their crisp outlines under a short, 12 millimetre pile. Knotted at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, the density let the weaver draw the sage-green medallion and its pink and blue surround with real precision rather than approximation, work that held a loom busy for months before this single piece was finished.

At home

At 238 x 151 cm this suits a living room or bedroom, sized for a seating group or the foot of a bed rather than a dining table. The sage green and ivory sit cool and composed against darker furniture, and warm gently on a pale floor without ever competing for attention. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than display, and the sage medallion keeps its quiet colour as the light in the room shifts through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 238 × 151 cm (3.59 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.59 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
