About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar, often traded as Lavar Kerman, 252 x 147 cm (8'3" x 4'10"), woven in the small town near Kerman that has produced Persia's finest carpets since the Qajar era. The type is known for a central medallion within elaborate borders, and for carrying a weaver's or patron's signature, making each piece a traceable heirloom.

What you see

This one sets the medallion aside. The field is warm ivory, covered edge to edge in a dense floral vine that reads almost like brocade. Small blossoms in brick red and dusky rose sit among serrated ochre and olive leaves, with slate blue threaded through. Near the right of centre a pale pink form curls like a paisley, likely a stylised floral spray. A wide navy border, filled with the same small repeat, frames the field and takes up a fifth of its width.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to carry this much drawing without it blurring into a single mass of colour. At 12 millimetres the pile sits low, keeping each blossom and leaf sharp underfoot. The rug carries a signature, the mark Ravar weavers use to name themselves or the household that commissioned the work, tying this piece to the hands that made it.

At home

A field this full and without a medallion suits a bedroom, where it reads as a calm garden rather than a single focal point. Laid on pale floors it warms the room; against darker wood its navy border holds its own. The hand-spun wool feels dense and springy, sturdy for daily use. As daylight crosses it, the florals catch a faint sheen against the cream ground, and the pattern seems to shift through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 252 × 147 cm (3.70 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.70 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
