Where it comes from
The rug in front of you is a Ravar, known in the trade as a Lavar Kerman, 240 x 153 cm (7'10" x 5'0"), woven in the small town of Ravar near Kerman that has produced some of Persia's finest carpets since the Qajar era. Ravar pieces were often signed by the weaver or the patron who commissioned them, which is why so many have survived as traceable heirlooms rather than anonymous goods. What sets this one apart within that tradition is its ground: where Kerman rugs typically favour a lighter or brick-red field, this one is worked in a deep navy with an aubergine cast, a darker and more dramatic choice than the type is known for.
What you see
That dark field is the first thing you notice, and against it the pattern reads with unusual clarity. Small floral sprays in dusty rose-pink and cream scatter densely across the navy ground, joined by touches of mustard-gold, camel and terracotta-orange, so that the surface never sits still even though the palette is quiet. At the centre, a lozenge medallion rises in cream and ivory, holding the composition together where the field might otherwise feel restless. Around all of this runs a wide, multi-band border in cream and slate-blue with further floral detail, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width and giving the dark centre a calm, ordered frame.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of between 321,000 and 380,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spinning gives the yarn a very fine, even thread, and it is this fineness that allows a knot count in that range, tight enough to draw out the small floral sprays with crisp, closely clipped edges rather than the softer blur a coarser weave would produce. At a 12 mm pile height the surface is dense but not deep, which is what gives it that soft, velvety hand and the light sheen visible across the florals. Building up that much detail, knot by knot, over a field this size is a slow undertaking, and it shows in the precision of every spray.
At home
At 240 x 153 cm, this is a rug for a seating area or a bedroom, somewhere it can be seen and read up close rather than crossed in passing. Against pale flooring the navy field grounds the room without darkening it, and set beside dark wood or upholstery it holds its own rather than disappearing into the shadows. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that is actually lived in, and as daylight moves across it the rose and cream florals catch the light in turn, so the dark ground never looks quite the same twice.
