About This Ravar
Where it comes from
This is a Ravar, known in the trade as Lavar Kerman, a rug type from a small town near Kerman in south-eastern Iran that has been producing some of Persia's finest weaving since the Qajar era. Measuring 269 x 160 cm (8'10" x 5'3"), it belongs to a tradition prized for fine detail and pleasant, balanced colouring built around a central medallion. What sets this piece apart within that tradition is its ground: where Ravar work is usually softly toned throughout, here the field is a deep, near-black indigo, a restraint the type rarely allows itself.
What you see
Against that dark ground, a large lobed medallion in cream floats at the centre, its pendants reaching so far up and down the field that they nearly touch the border, giving the whole composition a strong vertical spine. Around the medallion, sprays of dusty pink and coral flowers scatter through the darkness alongside touches of powder blue and sage green, each bloom lifted rather than absorbed by the black ground beneath it. The wide border in camel and gold, carrying its own scrollwork of pink and blue florals, closes the composition with a band of warmth that answers the dark field directly rather than blending into it. It is this contrast, pastel against near-black, that gives the rug its particular presence.
How it was made
That contrast is a product of the weaving itself. The pile is handspun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, fine enough to render the small florals and the medallion's curling edges without softening them into the ground. A pile height of just 12 millimetres keeps the surface close and even, so the colours sit flat and distinct rather than merging into shadow, which is exactly what lets the near-black field read as a deliberate colour rather than a dark blur.

A rug of this size suits a bedroom or a quieter sitting room, laid where it can be seen whole rather than half-hidden under furniture. The near-black field holds its own against dark wood and does not read as heavy even in a room with little natural light, while the pastel florals keep the whole piece from feeling sombre. Underfoot the pile is dense, soft and even, comfortable for a room that sees daily use rather than one kept for show. As daylight moves across it through the day, the cream medallion and the coral and blue florals catch the light in turn, so the rug never quite looks the same twice.
