About This Ravar

Where it comes from

This is a Ravar Kerman, also traded as Lavar Kerman, 238 x 195 cm (7'10" x 6'5"), from the town of Ravar near Kerman in Iran. Since the Qajar era, Ravar has produced some of the finest weaving Persia has to offer, and pieces were often signed by weaver or patron, which is why collectors reach for the name when they speak of Kerman at its best.

What you see

An open field of warm cream carries a finely drawn sunburst medallion at its centre, its pendant florals held quietly rather than crowding the ground. Salmon-pink and coral blooms sit against olive-gold accents, with touches of terracotta and dusty rose carried through the design. A narrow steel-blue border of paisley and floral scrollwork frames the field, the boteh worked directly into the guard, before a wide, dense navy-blue floral border closes the composition.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of around 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — a fineness that lets the weaver draw a curling paisley or a petal edge in a single row of knots rather than blurring it across several. Kept low, at some 12 millimetres, the pile holds that drawing crisply rather than softening it, which is why the medallion reads as clearly at a distance as it does close up.

At home

This suits a living room seating area, generous enough for a sofa and chairs, or equally a bedroom. The cream field lifts a pale floor and holds its own against darker furniture, with the navy border grounding the composition. Underfoot the pile is dense and even, firm rather than soft, made for daily use rather than display. As light crosses the room, the sheen in the lighter wool catches along the medallion's rays, keeping the eye on the centre without ever crowding the room around it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 238 × 195 cm (4.64 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.64 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
