About This Ravar
Where it comes from
A Ravar rug from the city workshops near Kerman in southern Iran, 266 x 149 cm (8'9" x 4'11"). Ravar pieces, sold in the trade as Lavar Kerman, have been prized since the Qajar era for a particular refinement: fine drawing, restrained colour, and a balance between central medallion, border and corner-fillings that collectors still treat as the benchmark for Kerman quality. Many were signed by the weaver or the patron, which is part of why they are traded today as traceable heirlooms rather than anonymous carpets.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, closely covered in small floral sprays in brick red, dusty rose and touches of sage. Across the centre lies an elongated gold medallion with a diamond-shaped core and trailing pendants, rather than the round or star form usual to the type, so it sits on the dark ground like a jewel set down rather than a motif repeated. A wide multi-banded border in cream and light blue, worked with red floral scrollwork, closes the design and takes up close to a fifth of the rug, its pale ground drawing the eye back out from the navy field.
How it was made
The pile is hand-knotted in hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, with the pile kept to a modest 12 millimetres. Hand-spinning gives the wool an irregular, fine thread that takes a tight knot well, which is what allows the medallion's diamond edges to stay crisp rather than blurring into curves, as a coarser yarn would force them to. The same fineness gives the gold and cream areas their soft sheen, a quality of light rather than of polish.
At home
At this size the rug suits a seating area or a bedroom rather than a full dining table, and the navy field is dark enough to hold its own against solid wood furniture while still lifting a pale floor with the gold and cream picking up the light. Underfoot it is short, dense and firm, a rug built for use rather than display. Watch it through a slow afternoon and the medallion is the part that keeps catching the sun.
