About This Lori-Pars
Where it comes from
This is a Lori-Pars, a hand-knotted rug from the nomadic weavers of the Zagros mountains in south-west Persia, measuring 194 x 154 cm (6'4" x 5'1"). Lori weavings are known for bold colour and confident, memory-drawn motifs, carried from mother to daughter rather than copied from a plan. This particular piece takes that same tradition and pares it right back, to a single warm tone and a quiet grid where a louder design would usually sit.
What you see
A warm sandy camel fills the field edge to edge, even and unbroken. Across it runs a fine grid of thin brown lines, dividing the field into rectangular panels rather than gathering around a medallion — there is no medallion here at all. Look closer and the lines are not solid: they are built from small dots and dashes, almost like a line of running stitch, with occasional darker brown flecks scattered along their length. A narrow beige border, only slightly lighter than the field, closes the design without competing with it.
How it was made
The rug is knotted entirely by hand in wool the weaver spun herself, at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a close, even weave for a piece worked without a drawn cartoon. Lori weavers knot from memory, which is why the pattern here is a grid rather than a repeated figure: a geometry simple enough to carry in the head and vary slightly, panel by panel, as the work went along. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly uniform, and it is this slight thickness variation that turns straight ruled lines into the dotted, stitched texture visible across the field. The pile stands eleven millimetres deep, giving the surface real body underfoot.
At home
A rug this size suits a bedroom floor or a smaller seating corner rather than a large room, and its warm camel tone will settle easily against pale oak or darker furniture alike. Underfoot the hand-spun wool feels dense and slightly springy, comfortable for a room in daily use rather than one kept for best. Sunlight moving across the field catches the striations in the yarn and the fine dotted grid, so the surface never quite sits still, even though the pattern asks for nothing more than a glance.
