About This Lori-Kashkouli

Where it comes from

This is a Kashkuli, also written Keshkuli, a tribal weaving from the Qashqai confederacy of southern Iran, 196 x 154 cm (6'5" x 5'1"). The Kashkuli clan is known among Qashqai weavers for the finest knotting in the tribe's repertoire, and usually for elaborate curvilinear medallions. Here the clan's skill is turned instead to something far plainer.

What you see

A warm gold field dominates, framed by a broad, mottled brown border that takes close to a fifth of the width on each side. Narrow vertical bands run the length of the field, each striped and set with a row of small taupe-grey squares, spaced like beads on a thread. There is no medallion, nothing at the centre to hold the eye. One band on the left breaks the rhythm, its gold replaced by a paler sandy cream, a shift that reads as memory, not mistake.

How it was made

That plainness is deceptive. The pile is hand-spun wool, spun unevenly by hand rather than machine, knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 per square metre, a density well above most tribal work. A weaver working from memory, not a drawn plan, needed months at the loom to hold each band this straight. The pile, sheared to a substantial 12 millimetres, gives the surface its slightly uneven, matte character, and that same hand-spun wool, likely from a different batch, explains the one paler band.

At home

This rug suits a seating area in a living room, or beside a bed. Against a pale floor the gold warms the room, and the brown border holds its own near darker furniture. Underfoot the hand-spun pile is soft yet dense enough for daily use. In evening light the gold deepens, and the small grey squares hold the eye, not a medallion.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 196 × 154 cm (3.02 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 3.02 m² that is roughly 610,000 to 750,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
