About This Loribaft
Where it comes from
This is a Loribaft runner from the Zagros mountains of Iran, 297 x 82 cm (9'9" x 2'8"). Loribaft weaving belongs to the same nomadic tradition as Gabbeh, made by hand from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and known for bold, simplified motifs in confident colour. This piece takes the same hand and spends it on restraint instead.
What you see
The ground is a warm sandy camel, left mostly plain, and this quiet field is what strikes first, not any single motif. Down its length run soft rectangular panels in slate blue-grey and dusty terracotta, each built from tiny speckled dots rather than a flat dye. There is no medallion and no repeat, only this loose sequence of colour drifting along the runner. The border is barely a border, the same camel as the field, marked only by small diamonds in red, blue and cream near the edge.
How it was made
The weaver spun this wool by hand and dyed it with plant and mineral colour from the mountains, and it is that hand-spinning which gives the panels their speckled look: a yarn of uneven thickness takes dye unevenly, so a terracotta panel reads as hundreds of small flecks rather than one flat colour. Knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the weave holds a clean edge on each panel while the 12 mm pile stays soft underfoot. Worked entirely from memory on a portable loom, it carries none of a workshop's symmetry, and none of it is missed.
At home
At 297 x 82 cm this is a runner for a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, and the camel ground warms a pale floor without shouting the length of the room. The blue-grey and terracotta panels give the eye something to follow underfoot rather than a pattern demanding attention outright. The wool is dense yet the pile stays soft, made for daily use rather than kept for best. Light along its length catches the speckling in the panels, so the rug looks a little different each time you pass it.
