About This Turkaman

Where it comes from

This is a Turkaman rug, also written Turkoman, a tribal weaving from the Turkmen communities of Iran, measuring 202 x 144 cm (6'8" x 4'9"). Turkmen weavers are known above all for the göl, a repeating clan emblem set on a deep red ground, and for a knot so fine and dense that their rugs count among the most durable of all hand-knotted work.

What you see

The ground is a deep bordeaux red, and across it rows of geometric göl diamonds repeat without pause, with no central medallion to break the rhythm. Dark blue accents sit inside the diamonds, sharpening their outline, and small touches of mustard, grey-blue and dusty pink appear in the minor motifs between them. Framing all this is a wide border built from several narrow ivory stripes, each carrying its own small stars and diamonds, stepping in one after another until the field feels properly enclosed.

How it was made

This rug is hand-knotted on a wool warp, its pile hand-spun wool sheared to an even 6 millimetres, at a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre. That density is what allows so many narrow border stripes to each carry their own pattern without blurring, and what gives the diamond field its sharp, clean edge. Woven within the last twenty years, it still carries the full depth of that bordeaux and blue.

At home

This is a rug for a bedroom or a quiet study, beside a bed or a reading chair. The bordeaux holds its own against dark furniture and warms a pale floor, while the ivory border keeps it from feeling heavy. Underfoot the pile is short, dense and firm, built for daily walking. As light crosses the room, it is the staggered border stripes that keep catching the eye.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 202 × 144 cm (2.91 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 2.91 m² that is roughly 1.5 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
