Where it comes from
The rug in front of you is a Turkmen weaving, made by the Turkoman tribes of northern Persia, 213 x 158 cm (7'0" x 5'2"). Turkmen rugs are known first for their gul, the repeating tribal medallion that identifies a clan, set traditionally on a deep red ground, and second for a density of knotting that makes them among the hardest-wearing of all hand-knotted rugs. This piece is newly made, but it carries the design forward exactly as it has been carried for generations.
What you see
The ground is a deep, brick-toned red, and across it runs a tight, disciplined grid of ivory elephant-foot guls, each one edged in dark navy and rust and set with the same spacing as the last. It is a strict repeat, the kind of order Turkmen weaving is built on, but between the medallions sit small navy cross motifs, breaking the grid just enough to keep it from feeling mechanical. Around all of this runs a border unusually wide for the type, band after band of ivory, navy and red in fine geometric pattern, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width and giving the field far more framing than most comparable Turkmen pieces receive.
How it was made
That framing and that crispness both come from the knotting. At 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre, this is a fine, dense weave, tight enough to draw the gul's edges sharply rather than let them blur into the ground, which is what gives the medallions their clean, almost drawn quality despite being knotted from memory. The pile is hand-spun wool, kept low at 6 mm, so the surface reads matte rather than glossy, with the slight irregularity of hand-spun yarn giving it a warmth that a machine-spun pile does not have. A density in that range, worked by hand across a piece this size, represents months at the loom.
At home
A rug of this size suits a living room, laid under a seating group or in front of a sofa where its red can hold its own against dark wood or leather furniture and still warm a pale floor. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than for careful stepping around, and the short, even pile takes traffic well. Set it where the light crosses it through the day and the ivory guls will catch first, sharp against the red, the small crosses between them keeping the whole grid quietly alive rather than rigid.
