Where it comes from
This is a Turkaman rug, from the Turkmen weaving tradition of Central Asia — also known as Turkoman, Tekke, Yomut or Ersari depending on clan — measuring 238 x 186 cm (7'10" x 6'1"). Turkmen weavings are known above all for their repeating gul medallions, tribal emblems unique to each clan, traditionally set on a deep red ground. This piece keeps the guls and abandons the red.
What you see
The field is a cool slate grey, unusual for this weaving, densely covered with three horizontal rows of stacked hooked diamonds in terracotta and rust, each outlined in cream. Touches of black and navy sharpen the geometry further. A wide burgundy border, banded with fine zigzag and diamond stripes, frames the field and takes up roughly a fifth of the rug's width, reading darker and more saturated against the grey than it would against a conventional red ground. The whole design gains a clarity the classic colourway rarely shows.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted on a wool warp, with the pile hand-spun from wool rather than machine-spun, so the yarn carries small irregularities that catch the light unevenly and keep the matt surface from ever looking mechanical. Knot density runs to 641,000–800,000 knots per square metre, tight enough to hold every hooked diamond crisp at its edges, which is what allows a field this pale to carry so much pattern without it blurring. At 6 mm the pile sits low and firm underfoot, built for daily wear rather than display.
At home
At 238 x 186 cm, this rug suits a living room seating area or a bedroom, somewhere it can be taken in whole. The grey field is the rare cool note in Turkmen weaving, and it settles easily against both pale floors and dark furniture, leaving the burgundy border to anchor the room. Underfoot it is dense and firm, in keeping with a weave known for holding up to daily use. As the light moves across it through the day, the hand-spun wool catches unevenly across the grey, and the pattern never quite sits still.
