About This Kashan

Where it comes from

This is a Kashan, also written Kāshān, one of Persia's historic city-workshop rugs, 215 x 140 cm (7'1" x 4'7"). Kashan is known for balanced medallion layouts, lyrical floral drawing and a deep crimson ground. This piece keeps the medallion but trades the usual blossoms for geometry, a Kashan built from diamonds rather than flowers.

What you see

The first impression is a dense lattice of navy and red, tight enough to read like inlaid tilework. At the centre, a diamond medallion is built from nested lozenges graduating from red through steel blue to cream, giving it a layered, faceted look. The navy field around it is filled edge to edge with the same fine lattice, so medallion and ground read as one continuous pattern rather than motif against background. A wide border of alternating red and navy compartments, floral and diamond in turn, closes the field.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, fine enough to carve the small lattice cells cleanly rather than let them blur together. Sheared to just 12 millimetres, the pile gives the surface a slightly ribbed, matte finish that keeps every facet of the medallion sharp. A rug of this density, forty to sixty years old, represents months of close work at the loom, and the precision of the geometry is the proof of it.

At home

At this size, the rug suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner, close enough to be seen properly rather than glimpsed across a room. Against a pale floor the navy grounds the space, while the brick red and dusty rose keep it warm rather than cold. The pile is short, dense and firm underfoot, made for daily use. As daylight moves across it, the graduated medallion keeps catching the eye anew.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 215 × 140 cm (3.01 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 3.01 m² that is roughly 1.0 to 1.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
