Where it comes from
This is a Kashan, a classic medallion carpet from the historic weaving city of central Iran, measuring 222 x 144 cm (7'3" x 4'9"). Kashan has been producing rugs of this kind for well over a century, celebrated for balanced medallion layouts and lyrical floral fields set against a deep, crimson ground.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, worked through with floral tracery in dusty rose, mustard and green. At its centre sits a large lobed medallion, its core a small octagonal rosette in ivory and steel blue, with slender pendants reaching toward either end of the field. Ivory cartouche spandrels fill the four corners, each echoing that same rosette, so the whole composition reads as mirrored and balanced. A wide navy-blue border of scrolling vines and palmettes closes the design, its dark ground holding firmly against the red.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted, with a cotton warp and a pile of hand-spun wool, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. That density is what allows the medallion's rosette and the corner spandrels to echo one another so precisely — a coarser weave would blur those small ivory forms into the surrounding red. The pile itself is kept short, at 12 millimetres, and sheared level, so the wool lies close and even rather than deep, letting the drawing read crisply from across a room. Twenty to forty years of use have softened its sheen only a little, leaving the colours full and the pattern sharp.

A rug this size suits a seating group in a living room, laid so the medallion sits before a sofa or under a low table where it can be seen whole. The red carries real weight against pale flooring and holds its own beside dark wood or leather, while the navy border keeps the whole design anchored rather than loud. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, made for a room that gets used rather than kept for best. As daylight crosses it through the day, the ivory of the medallion and corners catches first, and the mirrored balance of the design keeps drawing the eye back to its centre.
