About This Kashan

Where it comes from

This is a Kashan, a city-workshop rug from one of Iran's most historic weaving towns, measuring 332 x 239 cm (10'11" x 7'10"). Kashan is known above all for balanced medallion compositions on deep red grounds, drawn by workshop masters from a fixed cartoon rather than worked from memory. This piece is a textbook example of that tradition, evenly and cleanly drawn.

What you see

A deep brick red fills the field, met at once by an elaborate medallion in navy and ivory, its pendants reaching toward either end. Dense floral scrollwork in dusty blue, camel, sage and rust covers the ground without crowding it, and in each corner an ivory spandrel repeats the medallion's own colours, so the eye travels from centre to corner and back. A wide navy border, filled with the same scrollwork and edged by narrow ivory and rust guard stripes, closes the design and holds the whole in balance.

How it was made

The rug was hand-knotted in the Sherkat workshop, a name Kashan collectors associate with precise, evenly drawn medallion work of exactly this kind. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the wool is fine enough to hold the medallion's curves and the spandrels' mirrored outlines without blurring, so the two sides read as a true pair rather than an approximation. The hand-spun wool pile, set over a cotton foundation, carries a slight sheen where the lighter tones catch the light.

At home

At this size, the rug suits a dining table or a living room seating group, large enough to sit fully beneath either. The deep red holds its own against dark wood or leather, while the ivory spandrels lift a room with pale walls or floors. Underfoot the fine, dense pile feels smooth and firm, made for daily use rather than for standing aside. As daylight moves across the room, the sheen in the lighter florals shifts gently, keeping the balance of the design alive through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 332 × 239 cm (7.93 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 7.93 m² that is roughly 1.0 to 1.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
