Where it comes from
This is a Kashan, one of the great weaving cities of central Iran, in a size of 208 x 134 cm (6'10" x 4'5"). Kashan has been known for centuries for its balanced medallion compositions and flowing floral drawing, carried out with a precision that comes from working to a fixed workshop cartoon rather than from memory. This piece keeps that discipline but pushes the colour further than most Kashans dare to go.
What you see
The field is not the warm crimson usually associated with the city but a deep, almost black navy, densely covered in floral vines and rosettes. Floating on it is a diamond-shaped medallion built up in layers, a small ivory centre inside a red diamond inside the dark field, so it reads with real depth rather than sitting flat. Cream spandrels mark the corners, and around the whole composition runs a wide brick-red border of scrolling vines, held in place by narrow cream and red guard stripes. The contrast between that near-black ground and the saturated red is sharper and more graphic than the softer palette this design usually carries.
How it was made
That sharpness is earned in the making. The pile is wool blended with silk, and because silk fibres take a much finer twist than wool, they allow the weaver to turn a tighter line and a cleaner edge wherever the design calls for it, which is exactly what gives the medallion and the vine work their crispness rather than a blur. The knot count runs to 441,000-500,000 per square metre, a density that supports fine detail over a cotton warp, and the pile is kept low, at 12 mm, so the drawing stays sharp underfoot rather than softening into the wool. The rug is twenty to forty years old and hand-knotted throughout.

A piece this size suits a bedroom, a study, or a smaller seating corner rather than a full dining spread, and the near-black field is forgiving of daily life while still holding its own against dark wood or leather furniture. Underfoot it is dense and firm, with a short, even pile that takes regular use well rather than asking to be protected.
