About This Kashan
Where it comes from
A Kashan, from the historic weaving city of the same name in central Iran, measuring 207 x 145 cm (6'9" x 4'9"). Kashan is famous above all for its balanced medallion compositions and its lyrical floral drawing, worked out over generations of workshop production rather than improvised at the loom. Where the city's rugs are traditionally built on a deep crimson ground, this piece reverses the expectation and sets its medallion in navy.
What you see
The first impression is of a rich, almost inky navy field, carrying a bold medallion in brick red and ivory that immediately draws the eye. That medallion is diamond-shaped with pendants above and below, floating on dense floral vine scrollwork that fills the navy ground edge to edge. Ivory spandrels occupy the four corners, echoing the medallion's own palette and holding the whole composition in symmetry. A wide brick-red floral border, finished with an ivory floral guard stripe, closes the design and gives the navy field real contrast to sit against.
How it was made
The warp is silk rather than cotton, and silk can be spun far finer, which lets the weavers tie a much tighter knot than wool alone would allow. That is what gives the vine scrolls and the medallion's lobed edge their sharpness here, drawn rather than merely suggested. At a density of 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, reaching this crispness across a wool-and-silk pile is a matter of months at the loom, and the piece carries the signature of its workshop, Sherkat Farsh, as a mark of that standard. A pile of 12 mm, sheared close and even, keeps the drawing flat and legible rather than softened by depth.
At home
At this size the rug suits a study or a smaller living room, anchoring a chair group or sitting well in front of a desk. Navy holds its own against dark wood or leather furniture, while the red medallion and ivory spandrels lift the room rather than disappearing into it. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than merely admired, and the slight lustre in the wool means the medallion catches the light differently through the day, the red warming as the sun moves across it.
