About This Kashan

Where it comes from

This is a Kashan, one of the classic medallion carpets of Persian city weaving, measuring 245 x 197 cm (8'0" x 6'5"). Kashan has been a weaving city since the days of the Silk Road, and its workshops became known for balanced medallion compositions, lyrical floral patterns, and a deep, saturated red ground that few other centres carry off with such confidence.

What you see

The first impression is colour before pattern: a rich brick red fills the field edge to edge, unbroken by any secondary ground. A large medallion in navy and cream sits at the centre, its pendants reaching up and down the field, drawn with crisp, clean outlines. Around it, small floral sprays in soft pink, mustard-gold and sage scatter across the red, each finely drawn rather than repeated. A wide navy border of scrolling floral vine closes the composition, framed by narrow ivory and steel-blue guard stripes that hold the red field firmly in place.

How it was made

This is hand-knotted work, hand-spun wool pile on a cotton warp, at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. That density is what keeps the medallion's outline so sharp and lets the small floral sprays hold their shape instead of blurring into the red ground. The pile is clipped to 12 millimetres and finished evenly, giving the surface a soft matte look with a trace of sheen, so that every line of the drawing reads clearly even from across a room.

At home

At 245 by 197 cm, this Kashan suits a living room, laid in front of a sofa or under a low table where the medallion stays in view. The red field warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood furniture, needing nothing else in the room to match it. Underfoot it is dense and firm, a wool pile knotted to be walked on rather than kept for best. As the light moves through the day, the red deepens and the cream cartouches catch what remains, keeping the medallion the thing the eye returns to.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 245 × 197 cm (4.83 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.83 m² that is roughly 1.0 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
