Where it comes from
A Kashan of 215 x 138 cm (7'1" x 4'6") comes from one of Persia's most celebrated carpet-weaving cities, a place whose workshops built their reputation on balanced medallion designs, lyrical floral drawing, and a deep, glowing red ground. This piece sits comfortably within that tradition, a clean and confidently drawn example of what a Kashan is meant to look like.
What you see
The field is a vivid brick red, dense with fine floral tracery in dusty pink, sky blue, mustard and sage. At its centre stands a bold diamond medallion in ivory and navy, its pendant tips reaching toward the corners, where ivory spandrels pick up the same palette and echo its shape. The effect is one of quiet symmetry, a layout that mirrors itself from corner to centre. Around it all runs a wide navy border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, filled with its own scrolling floral vine and setting the red field into sharp relief.
How it was made
That crispness comes from the way the rug was made. Kashan workshops draw their designs on a cartoon before a single knot is tied, and the weavers follow it with a precision that keeps every curve and spandrel matching its counterpart. Here the density runs to 381,000-440,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand over a cotton warp in hand-spun wool, with a pile shorn to just 12 millimetres. That combination of fine knotting and a closely trimmed pile is what gives the surface its soft, even matte finish, with a light sheen picked out in the lighter motif colours, and what lets a pattern this detailed still read cleanly from across a room.

At roughly two by one and a half metres, this is a rug for a seating area or a dining table for four, in a living room or dining room where it can be seen whole. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or pale oak floors alike, warming the room rather than competing with it. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than for standing aside.
